PERPLEX is an cohesive and comprehensive conceptual branding for Ringling College of Art + Design's Motion Design conference FutureProof 2023. In creating this with fellow motion designer Jessica Buck, the entirety of this project includes all aspects of design, animation, and branding that are to be created for a motion design conference, including an animated title opener, posters, merch, speaker slates, and more.
the
intro
I wanted to depict and celebrate all of our creativities and craziness inside our head as motion designers. You think of elegant statues one second, the next you are adding a fish and burgers in your frames. I wanted to embrace those "hummm, what about..." moments in this piece. Even with all that weirdness that doesn't make sense to some, to us, everything is ALL GOOD!
the
very beginning
These are the initial two concepts I pitched. While the first one celebrates the weirdness in our minds, the second one appreciates the history of motion design, for example, the dinosaur is a reference to Gertie the Dinosaur.
My partner also pitched two ideas. In the end, our client (professor) picked my first idea. Then we also combined some of Jess's ideas and design choices into our frames.
the
designs
Then we started creating these slightly weird yet elegant scenes in 3D. The idea is to add more and more color until we get to the final shots, taking audience through these environments, and see how everything relate to each other in the very end
the
storyboards
Shout out to Jess! After we planned out the scenes, decided on the transitions, she made the chaotic story in our head a lot more clear by drawing them out.
After all that, our design phase was finished. During our animation period, we also were tasked to design other branding elements to make this whole project complete. Here below are some of the fun things Jess and I designed.
